Mid-winter Hoverfly

An Episyrphus balteatus landed on my hand while out and about near Glynneath today. This hoverfly can be found on the wing in any month of the year and it's "friendly" nature is something that I've often found quite endearing about this species.

Probably trying to get some heat - I hope your hands were warm! Very nice record.

No doubt the case in this instance but I've found this hoverfly to be quite inquisitive of movement in the heat of summer. I've noticed they often hover at close quarters and I've found that if you raise your hand towards them slowly with no sudden movements they will often just land on your hand. It's pretty cool but not as good as having a Pom at close quarters!
