Frog spawning

There was lots of activity in the garden pond last night and we had out first spawn this morning. I'd e interested to hear other first spawn dates, especially from those of you who reported them last year...

First lot of frogspawn in the pond today, in Brynmill, Swansea.
Out of interest, the first sightings here over the last few years have been
2011 11 Feb
2010 15 Feb
2009 14 Feb
2008 22 Jan
2007 3 Feb
2006 12 Feb

The newts will be ok for their favourite food- froggy tadpoles- once again.

just thought you'd be interested to know ... i went out to check on the frog spawn today and found a lot more, including quite a bit in the grass surrounding the pond which i have moved into the water. i hope that was the right thing to do. seems our frogs are very busy this year!

where can i take the children to see some frogspawn, as they are learning about it in school. which pond is it please, is it Fendrod Lake or the Pluck?

Sue, seems like you've probably done the right thing. Frogs often lay eggs in the most unexpected places, some of which are totally unsuitable!

Anon, I suggest that you have a recce at some ponds local to your school. Almost any small pond that does not have fish in it stands a good chance of having frog spawn in it. Try and avoid the bigger ponds as you are much less likely to find frogs here.

PS. Brynmill Anon - some interesting records there. Looks like 2011 spawning is a fairly typical date at your site. Many thanks for posting here.

thanks, barry. i live in Plasmarl. is it still water that has more chance of having frogspawn than fast flowing streams? i dont drive so Brynmill park is a bit far. the children are off today and very enthusiastic to find some and take some photos.
